Horse Volunteer Reviews
Thanks to all the AP staff for the 2 weeks together. I can’t find the words to express how I feel. I ‘m grateful to have had the opprotunity to come here and meet everyone. This was the best experience I have ever had. It’s the first time in 21years that I’ve felt at home. My body goes back to France but my heart and soul stay here.

More About Your Horse Volunteer Project
You will receive an introduction into the busy but exciting stable life during your first week. You will be guided step by step through your weekly schedule, introduced to the horses and shown the ropes.
There is no typical day in stables. Every day presents new challenges or duties to be completed. We ask you to be flexible and go with the flow whilst you are on the project. Your days will be long and sometimes tiring, but always very rewarding.
We are big believers of ‘learning on the job’ and that is exactly what you will be doing. You will gain invaluable experience in stable management, with our stables team supporting you along the way. The longer you spend on the project with us, the more responsibilities and duties you will be trusted with. From leading a guest ride, to teaching a lesson to a beginner, you will become an important member of the team.
We welcome riders of all abilities with a passion for horses. Beginners are guided into riding with regular lessons in the school and slow rides out in the bush. For those with more experience on horseback and wanting to push themselves, we offer more advanced rides such as fast horse safaris and opportunities to compete in external riding competitions, such as monthly show-jumping shows.

Horse Volunteer Project FAQs
How often will I be riding?
While the riding is the best part of working in the stables, horse and stable maintenance is vitally important and the top priority on the horse project.
You will be riding most days of the week, whether its school, going on a horseback safari, a horse swim, playing polocrosse, show-jumping, a sunrise ride, or a boundary patrol, there is always a reason to get into the saddle.
There are plenty of opportunities on project to develop your skills and experience some incredible riding activities in the African bush!
What is my weekly schedule like?
There is no typical day at the stables. Every day is different with fresh demands or challenges. We ask you to be as flexible as possible on a day-to-day basis.
The morning usually consists of some horse and stables maintenance with some kind of horse ride in the mid-morning or afternoon.
The rest of the day will be moulded around any pressing duties that need to be completed.
Are the horses safe to ride?
The horses are perfectly safe to ride, and we have different horses for different riding abilities. Our stable staff know the horses incredibly well.
We do ask you to be totally honest with us about your previous riding experience. It is vitally important that we put you on a horse that is suitable for your level.
With some many horses in stables, we are sure you will find the right horse.
Can I do more as part of my project than just horses?
Yes! We offer a Horses & Lion project for those looking to get the best of both worlds. The ratio is 80% horses and 20% lions.
As part of this project, you will spend most of your weekend in the stables caring for and riding the horses and, on the weekend, you will get the opportunity to get involved with lion activities such as: lion feeding, behavior enrichment and elephant herding.
It is also possible to switch a day of horses during the week for a day on the lion project. We aim to be as flexible as possible.
