Helping Local Communities in Livingstone, Zambia!
This project supports learning and community growth in schools around Livingstone, Zambia. You’ll spend your days helping in classrooms, assisting with schoolwork, and supporting fun, interactive learning sessions that encourage children to enjoy education.
It’s all about creating positive learning spaces where young people feel confident, curious and excited about their future.
Overview of the Project
You’ll work alongside teachers and community leaders to support children of different ages. Your role includes helping students with reading, writing and basic subjects, encouraging interactive learning and joining in group activities that make school fun.
Outside the classroom, you’ll be part of community learning groups where children can get extra support, build confidence, and strengthen friendships. You’ll also help with simple activities that bring creativity and joy into everyday learning.
No prior teaching experience is needed, just a willingness to help and a friendly, open attitude.

Monday
07:00 – 07:40 | Breakfast
08:00 – 11:00 | Teaching Assistant
Participants support classroom learning for students in Grades 4–6, usually at Libuyu Community School. Subjects typically include English, Mathematics, and Science. Participants work alongside local teachers to assist with marking, classroom activities, and lesson delivery. There is also the opportunity to lead parts of the lesson independently with guidance from staff. Each morning usually consists of three classroom sessions. Support with lesson planning and translation is available if required.
11:00 – 12:00 | Back at the House
Participants return to the house and have some free time to relax, read, or run errands such as visiting the local supermarket.
12:00 – 12:30 | Lunch
12:30 – 13:00 | Preparation Time
Participants prepare for the afternoon activities with the project staff, ensuring everyone understands their role and that materials are ready. This may also include preparing simple snacks and juice for the students.
13:00 – 16:00 | Community Project
Each afternoon participants take part in a different community initiative. Projects may include activities such as Eco Club, Math Club, Reading Club, Girl Impact, Rugby, Health Club, and other youth programs. Participants from different project areas—education, medical, and sports—often work together to create a supportive and engaging environment.
16:30 – 18:00 | Meeting
Back at the house, the team gathers for the weekly Monday meeting. This is a chance for everyone to introduce themselves, review the plan for the week ahead, and hear any important updates or announcements.
18:00 – 18:30 | Dinner
18:30 onwards | Free Time
A relaxed evening to unwind, get to know each other, and settle into the week ahead.

After returning to the house, Pprticipants attend an activities briefing hosted by Victoria Falls Backpackers. This session provides information about optional weekend excursions and experiences available around Livingstone.

12:30 – 13:00 | Preparation Time
Participants prepare for the afternoon session with the project staff, reviewing activities and ensuring all materials are ready. This may also include preparing simple snacks and juice for the students.
13:00 – 16:00 | Community Project

Participants enjoy a relaxed evening with a movie night at the house, a great opportunity to unwind and spend time with the group.

Back at the house, participants take part in a short language session where a staff member teaches basic Nyanja phrases. This helps participants better connect with students and the local community.
12:00 – 12:30 | Lunch
12:30 – 13:00 | Preparation Time
Participants prepare for the afternoon activities with the project staff, reviewing plans and ensuring all materials are ready. This may also include preparing snacks and juice for the students.
13:00 – 16:00 | Community Project
Each afternoon participants take part in a different community initiative. Activities may include Eco Club, Math Club, Reading Club, Girl Impact, Rugby, Health Club, and other youth programs. Participants from various project areas often work together to support these sessions.
16:30 – 18:00 | Maramba Market Visit
Participants visit the nearby Maramba community market, where a variety of goods are sold. The colourful fabric stalls are particularly popular, and many volunteers choose to purchase chitenge fabric that can be turned into custom skirts, bags, or other handmade items by local tailors.
18:00 – 18:30 | Dinner
18:30 onwards | Games Night
Participants enjoy a fun evening together, either playing games at the volunteer house or heading into town to take part in a local pub quiz.

Participants have the opportunity to take part in a Village Tour organised by a local women’s group. This initiative helps generate income for the community while giving volunteers the chance to experience everyday life in nearby neighbourhoods around Livingstone. Participants may also sample traditional local snacks during the visit.
If participants have already participated in the Village Tour during a previous week, they instead take part in a community project such as assisting with youth activities or supporting a local initiative.

Before lunch, the team gathers for a weekly check-in. This is an opportunity for participants to share feedback on the week, receive updates about the house, review weekend plans, and welcome any new arrivals.
12:30 – 13:30 | Cultural Meal
Enjoy a traditional meal together, offering volunteers the chance to experience local Zambian flavours and dishes.
13:30 – 16:00 | Cultural Afternoon / Community Project
Participants gather in the boma area at the backpackers for a cultural session about Zambia. The session often includes a talk about local traditions, time for questions, and a fun demonstration of a traditional wedding ceremony, where volunteers may take part in a playful “mock wedding.” The afternoon usually finishes with drumming and dancing together.
If participants have already attended the cultural afternoon during a previous week, they instead participate in a community project.

Enjoy a relaxed evening at the house. Participants can spend time socialising, playing games, reading, or simply unwinding after the week’s activities.
Weekend
Weekends provide participants with a chance to relax, recharge, and explore the area around Livingstone. This is a perfect time to discover the local culture, nature, and attractions at your own pace.
Participants can choose from a range of optional activities such as visiting Victoria Falls, taking part in wildlife excursions, exploring local markets, or joining community tours. There are also plenty of opportunities to relax at the volunteer house, read, socialise, or enjoy games with fellow volunteers.
Please note: Weekend activities are optional, and the schedule is flexible. Availability of excursions may vary depending on weather, local conditions, and group size.

Livingstone holds some of Zambia’s most remote, untouched and pure wilderness with stunning wildlife. With unfenced parks and camps, all kinds of wild and exquisite game walk by the fireplace at night, right at your volunteer base.
Located in the centre of southern Africa and one of the exclusive 8 countries, with the mighty Zambezi River flowing through; Zambia is a unique destination. But Livingstone is the real gem. With the magnificent Victoria Falls as the main attraction

The project includes accommodation and full meals provided 7 days a week.

The project package does not cover the following items: flights to the designated location, expenses related to obtaining a visa, insurance costs, optional additional excursions, and any personal expenses you may incur during your participation.
